THE VISION OF A CHAMPION BY ANSON DORRANCE SET FOR FIFTH PRINTING
Ann Arbor, MI (March 1, 2005)—Legendary women’s soccer coach Anson Dorrance and Huron River Press
announce the fifth printing of his award-winning book, The Vision of a Champion—Advice and
Inspiration from the World’s Most Successful Women’s Soccer Coach. The highly successful book,
first published in 2000, is being released in paperback with a new cover and an addendum.
The Vision of a Champion, which features a very personal forward by Mia Hamm, one of Dorrance’s
many famous alumni as coach of the University of North Carolina (UNC), also includes first-person
contributions by a dozen other notable players, many of whom have gone on to win Olympic and World
Championship titles. It covers all aspects of the UNC program, and teaches readers how to be champions
both on the field and off.
The book has garnered literary honors, including being named a finalist for the 2000 ForeWord Magazine
Book of the Year in its category, one of the most prestigious awards in publishing. Soccer America
magazine has called The Vision of a Champion “a real prize.”
Anson Dorrance is credited with having set the standard for the women's game worldwide. He has led
the University of North Carolina Tar Heels to 18 Championship titles during the 24-year history of
collegiate women's soccer. Under Dorrance, North Carolina has won more NCAA championships than any
other Division 1 women's program in any sport. He has been named National Coach of the Year for both
men’s and women’s soccer.
As the U.S. Women's National Team coach from 1986 to 1994, he led the team to the gold medal in the
first-ever FIFA Women's World Championship in 1991 in China. That 1991 World Championship team,
including Dorrance, was awarded the National Soccer Medal of Honor in August 2001, by The National
Soccer Hall of Fame, only the third time in 20 years this honor has been presented. In 2004, he was
included as one of ESPN’s Best Coaches of the past 25 years, joining a prestigious list of notables
selected from all sports. Dorrance is also the author of the best-selling soccer book, Training
Soccer Champions (1996, JTC Sports, Inc.).
The fifth printing of The Vision of a Champion, co-authored with fitness writer Gloria Averbuch,
is available wherever books, and will also be available at UNC girls soccer camp (www.ncgsc.com).
