Huron River Press Becomes an Independent Publishing Company with New Ownership
Ann Arbor, Michigan. (February 21, 2005)—Huron River Press, formerly an imprint of Ann Arbor,
Michigan-based publisher Clock Tower Press, has become a separate publishing company under the new
ownership of Steven Klein. Klein’s purchase of the imprint’s name and publishing assets and the
establishment of a new company were finalized in January 2005.
“Huron River Press will continue to focus on books about Michigan and the Great Lakes region,”
says Klein. “We plan to expand our offerings over the next several years, adding additional titles
and broadening our distribution network.”
Upcoming Huron River Press titles:
“I am very excited about the opportunity to build on the strong record of success the Huron River
Press imprint has already established,” Klein says. “We have a number of interesting new releases
under way for 2005, and I look forward to getting them out of the starting gate.” Upcoming titles
to be released this summer, he reports, include a new cookbook featuring recipes from the many
distinctive eateries of the Mainstreet Ventures restaurants (including Ann Arbor mainstays Palio,
Gratzi, The Chop House, La Dolce Vita and Real Seafood Co.); From the Heart, featuring
compelling true stories of the people and places of Michigan from WXYZ TV Channel 7’s award winning
anchorman Erik Smith; and a unique look at Lake Superior by noted nature photographer Bruce Montagne.
Coming this fall, Return to the Common Grill, a second volume of the popular Common Grill
Cookbook, by local chef Craig Common will be released.
Current Huron River Press best-selling titles include Schuler’s: Fresh Recipes and Warm Memories
by the father and son team of Hans and Jonathan Schuler of the famous Marshall, MI restaurant,
A Distant Thunder: Michigan in the Civil War by journalist Richard Bak, and the soft cover
edition of Tradition: Bo Schembechler’s Michigan Memories by legendary coach Bo Schembechler
with Dan Ewald.
Klein’s professional background
After close to dozen years at Chrysler Corporation, Klein explored the path of an entrepreneur working
with technology companies and his own software company. He has spent the last ten years working with
companies “in transition,” including fundraising, management restructurings, bankruptcy reorganization,
and mergers and acquisitions. His approach has always been one of hands-on management, serving as
interim president, CEO, COO, CFO, or key officer for the companies he has worked with.
Klein is no stranger to Huron River Press and the publishing business. In 2002 he was an active member
of the team that established a new publishing company, Clock Tower Press, out of the holdings of
Sleeping Bear Press (Chelsea, MI). After overseeing the sale of the Sleeping Bear name and children’s
books division to Gale Publishing (Farmington Hills, MI), he continued to work as a consultant to Clock
Tower Press and the Huron River Press division.
