From the Heart

Huron River Press is pleased to release, From the Heart, by award wining newscaster Erik Smith. The celebrated anchorman for ABC, Channel 7, early-morning news in Detroit presents us with a collection of stories about the exceptional Michigan people who dared to live theirs dreams. He has transformed his award winning television series, “From The Heart” into a treasure of compelling, emotionally charged short stories. His experience and warm tone captures the spirit and heart of metropolitan Detroit.

Julie Hinds, of The Detroit Free Press says, “The quality of Smith’s reporting has earned him comparisons to the Charleses – Kuralt and Osgood.” “He’s the master story-teller of Detroit television,” says Tim Kiska, Author and Media Writer for The Detroit News.

The 216-page, hard cover book, features 48 stories organized into 5 sections covering all of life’s moments; Childhood, Marriage, Passions, Transformations and the Golden Years. Highlights of the book include the story of Harry and Sylvia Granader, founders of Camp Mak-A-Dream. Readers will also read the story of WDET’s Robert B. Jones, discover Pete the Barber (who still charges $1.50 a cut) and learn about Robert Felton’s Institute of Grillology. The book also outlines the passion of Mertize’s original hats to help the Capuchin Soup Kitchen.

The author’s proceeds from the sale of this book benefit Friend of Camp Mak-A-Dream, Michigan Chapter, an organization that helps to brighten the lives of children and young adults with cancer, by providing them with the opportunity to attend summer camp at camp Mak-A-Dream in Gold Creek, Montana.

Professor Ben Burns of Wayne Sate University sums it up best, “He’s the kind of guy you’d like to sit on the back porch with and put your feet up, have a beer and just listen to his stores.” Enjoy From the Heart, the perfect summer read.
